One of the great things I love to do when doing an interviews is asking challenging questions. Some will answer and keep it simple, but there are those that love to give a great insight into not only their on screen performance but their life as a whole. Once you read this interview you will have a new and respected meaning of Diego de la Hoya. I asked the questions and he opened his life for me and for that I truly do thank him for taking the time not only to answer what I asked, but giving me an insight into someone I truly do respect and admire.

Marc Blackwell: Please tell me how did you get your start in the Porn Industry?

Diego de la Hoya: It was a busy night at the Powerhouse, a bar in the South of Market area of San Francisco, when I came across two all-American male beauties, which I couldn't resist. I recall that the bar was busy and somewhat dark, with only one area well lit, where these two all-American studs stood. I approached them and said," make room for the Latin-heat." They looked at me and laughed with welcoming smiles. I turned to the one on my left, "you sure do look like one of those guys who is sweet on the surface but loves to be a pig - a real PIG in bed." During the same time as Chi Chi's offer, the legendary porn director, John Rutherford, also contacted me to ask if I would be interested in being part of a nine guy leather scene for COLT Studios. Would you have been able to say no? In a way, it was a process that unfolded from my fantasies, yet has brought real life joys and amazing experiences into my life.

Marc Blackwell: Great name, so how did you come up with your stage name?

Diego de la Hoya: I wanted a name that accurately represented me as an educated, gay, Latin man with a rich history. My friend Atul suggested Diego, which I instantly fell in love with. , For the last name I wanted something that was just as distinctively Latin, (as I wanted to be a representative for all the Latinos who are underrepresented in the porn industry). Through much brainstorming and several eliminations I arrived at "de la Hoya." When I presented my suggestions to COLT studios, both John Rutherford and Manfred absolutely loved them and knew that this was the name for me - Diego de la Hoya was born! Manfred very excitedly informed me that there was an actual Diego de la Hoya who had been a prominent noble in medieval times. I found everything I wanted in a name and it has served me well.

Marc Blackwell: What has been your favorite porn scene in any of your videos?

Diego de la Hoya: "Side Effects" (Titan Media, directed by Brian Mills), is definitely one of my favorite porn scenes. At the start of the scene, I am in a warehouse, up on a ladder, working away while feeling incredibly horny in the darkness of the room. Through this recognition, both studios have given me the utmost respect. They know that whenever they choose me for one of their scenes, they are not just using another guy who gets naked for the cameras, but one who sees his role as porn star as something much larger. Marc Blackwell: Which of the companies that you have worked for would you say was your worst?

Diego de la Hoya: I have worked for predominantly top companies who have high reputations. Despite this, I have had two experiences that were not to my liking. One experience I'll share now and perhaps the other sometime later in this interview. It wasn't the company that made this the worst experience, but rather the director's attitude and behaviors. Let me begin by saying that although I have been in versatile roles, I am predominantly a top; it comes more naturally to me. I don't have an issue bottoming, but it requires a lot of mental exercise and effort for me to be able to reach a place of comfort that transgresses that borderline from pain to pleasure. Once I do manage, with much effort, I can ride it like I stole it. However, the required effort is indicative of it's unnaturalality for me. I simply love topping. Period. Well, for this particular shoot, I was brought in to do a scene as a top; however, I ended up being forced into a role that I didn't want to accept. (The director implied that the model release form I had signed required most anything he wanted.) I managed to do the scene -- an incredibly hot one too; but, I couldn't help but feel as though I was treated like a piece of meat, without a voice or agency in my role, only worthy of objectification to meet the immediate needs of a scene at my expense. Though the scene turned out to be hot and many fans still talk about it to this day, this director's attitude and behaviors were such that I would never work for this person again, nor for that company either.

Marc Blackwell: What would you consider your best asset and worst asset?

Diego de la Hoya: I am not good at answering questions about my best asset or my worst ones either. As an ex-preacher and minister I have always looked at myself from the inside out. If taken from this perspective I would say my integrity and loyalty are my best assets and my worst energy of resentment towards those who have been near and dear in my life and have failed to maintain their integrity with me.

Marc Blackwell: Are there any video companies you would like to work for in the future?

Diego de la Hoya: I would like to continue working for both COLT and Titan Media. As I have already said, they understand that I am a man who was on a mission way before I ventured into this path and they also see that life has a greater mission in store for me in the future. I hope to continue touching the lives of many and bringing them redemption, hope and sexual freedom through the example of my own life.

Marc Blackwell: I understand the craziness and drama that occurs on these shoots. Any bad experiences in your past you would like to share?

Diego de la Hoya: Yes. I will not share the name of the movie (as I am very grateful to have been a part of this award-nominated scene), but I had an experience that started from a place of utter excitement, but ended with nothing but despise for my fellow co-stars.
I arrived at the studio on an early Tuesday morning, when I encounter a hunk of a newcomer. I was already oozing sex all over, so to encounter such an arousing co-star added to my excitement. I later met my other co-star who was rude, obnoxious and standoffish. I soon found out that this was going to be his first scene, so moved by compassion, I attributed his Prima Donna attitude to nervousness and looked past his attitudes and ill-manners. I was enjoying such great enthusiasm that nothing could ruin my spirits on this day. Little did I know.? Before the scene began, the director gathered the crew and stars to share the layout of the scene. It was my fantasy scenes come true! At one point I would fuck this badly-behaved bottom boi, who would also be fucked, at the same time, by another fellow co-star. Next, I would fuck them both -shifting back and forth between them. Only a top like me can understand how excited I was about this scene. I could have burst from the inside out. Marc Blackwell: I also understand a lot of fun can be had while shooting porn, any favorite shoots you can tell us about?

Diego de la Hoya: Despite the two aforementioned experiences, I have mostly enjoyed wonderful experiences and amazing fun on the sets during shoots. The shoot where I had the most fun was during the filming of the critically acclaimed "Buckleroos." I was hanging out with the incredibly sexy and sweet Owen Hawk and the hilarious Brad Benton. (This scene later won "Best Three Way" in 2005.) We spent our days with 10 or 12 amazingly wonderful guys, (Marcus Iron, Dean Phoenix, Zak Spears, Ricky Martinez and Mr. Pam, to name a few.). When we were not shooting a scene or taking stills, we would enjoy the beauty of this rugged ranch in Sacramento with expansive fields and a gorgeous private pool. Wearing boxers, jocks or simply hanging out naked we chatted, laughed and shared our stories and experiences in a spirit of brotherhood that was unlike any I had so far experienced during the filming of a movie. I believe it was this prevailing positive energy that made this movie the HIT it ended up to be. Another shoot I have very fond memories of is "Hog: The Leather File" set. This was my first movie scene ever. Upon my arrival, I had met 7 of the guys who were to be a part of this scene, but one of the guys was missing. Throughout the morning I kept wondering where was this ninth guy. To pass the time, I kept checking out this amazingly good-looking guy: tall, built, smooth body, creamy vanilla skin. He was wearing tight jeans that caressed his gorgeous ass. When John Rutherford (who was directing this movie for COLT), called for everybody to dress up, instead of getting naked, I ran into a little dark closet and closed the black curtain behind me. Diego de la Hoya: Well, many of you may know that I used to be a Pentecostal preacher and minister. Currently, I work for the University of California in San Francisco, at their center for AIDS Prevention Studies. I help manage a project, which is researching the relationship dynamics of male-male relationships, sexual agreements (regarding sex outside their relationship) and HIV risk levels. I also consider myself a "minister of the flesh" who tries to be an example of liberation and hope to those who come across my work in porn or any other arena. My life has a rich history, and has been a great spiritual adventure thus far. Coming from a family of eight, I've experienced my share of adversities as well as joy. I pray that life continues to guide me to the path where I can make the most difference in this sad, beautiful, tender and sexy world.
